New York Power Authority announced its first state-owned utility-scale energy storage system went fully live on August 25, 2023. The 20-megawatt facility is in the North County of the state, where it supports the state’s goal of 6,000-megawatts storage by 2030. The New York State battery storage project includes some interesting features, that we decided were worth a post of their own.

More About the New York State Battery Storage Project

The 20-megawatt project connects into the New York Power Authority’s grid. Its job is to help relieve transmission congestion there. But it also has a deeper, more fundamental role. It may be relatively insignificant in the greater order of things. But the state hopes it will provide practical experience of integrating remote energy into the power system.

“Deploying energy storage technologies will make our power supply more reliable and resilient, further enabling New York to build a robust clean energy grid,” Gov Hochul explains. “The completion of the Northern New York State Battery Storage project therefore marks an important step to reaching our energy storage and climate goals.”

If the header image of this post intrigues you, then you may be interested to know you are only seeing part of one-of-five battery enclosures. Each of these facilities is 53-feet long, and has over 19,500 batteries grouped in modules, and stacked in racks. Each module has a 4-megawatt capacity. This is sufficient power for approximately 3,000 homes.

However, renewable energy is not new to New York State. The administration already boasts the 800-megawatt Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt hydro power project. Plus it more recently added 650-megawatts of wind generation. Battery storage could complete the mix, when the wind drops at night as the Empire State prepares for carbon-free electricity.
