Before the advent of modern medical science our ancestors used organic remedies to treat ailments. Indeed, many modern medications build on these traditional roots. But whether their effectiveness depends on the mind or the body is a matter of ongoing debate. Perhaps we should not pretend we know everything as North Korea fights the virus with folk remedies.
How North Korea Is Fighting the Virus Traditionally
The old folk used to say a flu takes two weeks to cure, regardless of whether you use medicines or common sense. We do know the coronavirus COVID-19 is also self-terminating, although it may cause symptoms that are serious, even deadly.
North Korea appears to be rejecting outside help as it faces a surge of COVID-19 in an unvaccinated population. BBC News has been monitoring the state media which it says is recommending these traditional alternative treatments:
1… Infected people who are not seriously ill should gargle with ginger, or honeysuckle tea with a willow-leaf drink. The BBC observes these will not treat the symptoms any more than any other warm drink. However, ginger and willow leaf may have some extra inflammation and pain-reducing properties.
2… State media have also mentioned gargling with salt water every morning and night. Some western studies suggest salt gargling and nose rinses can combat the common cold which is also a coronavirus. Although there is little evidence this stops the spread of COVID-19.
3… The official television channel advises those with severe symptoms use painkillers such as ibuprofen, as well as amoxicillin and other antibiotics. BBC says these “can bring down a temperature and ease symptoms such as headache or sore throat. But they won’t clear the virus or prevent it developing.”
Our Hearts Reach Out to the People of North Korea
We understand the health system is weak in rural areas, far away from national capital city Pyongyang on Taedong River. We wish we could do something practical to help. Let’s spare a thought for North Korea in quiet moments. The West also has many cases despite all our vaccines and medications.
