We only have small hints of Omicron symptoms to date. Although we do know all coronaviruses infect the breathing tract between our mouths, noses and lungs. And moreover, that these infections can cause immune reactions obstructing our breathing. Although on the other hand symptoms can also range from mild to none. Therefore predicting the emerging symptoms of Omicron in individuals could help doctors recommend best early treatments.
Individual Omicron Symptoms – What We Now Know
Coronavirus disease generally takes a week or two to mature in individuals. And it quite often retreats, before it accelerates. The impact may be worse in immune compromised individuals. Early South African reports suggest symptoms may be ‘mild’. However those first samples came from young people at universities celebrating academic year end.
Common coronavirus symptoms – only some of which are prominent in Omicron – include:
hot fever / cold chills
cough, shortness of breath
tiredness, body / muscle aches
headaches, sore throat
loss of smell / taste
clogged or runny nose
However, the UK Express reports night sweating is also occurring in Britain. Omicron patients there awake to find their night clothes and bed sheets soaked through, even though their bedroom was cool.
Most people recover from Omicron at home, hopefully after sheltering from family and friends. However some still require breathing assistance with oxygen or ventilator.
Predicting the Emerging Symptoms of Omicron with Blood Tests
COVID Resource Center Helio suggests an early blood test may predict COVID-19 severity. They confirm California Nagourney Cancer Institute ran a cross-sectional, observational study of 113 participants.
Their method involved comparing blood of 82 infected Omicron people with 31 clear ones. And they noticed changes in concentrations of three metabolites also associated with diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. These metabolites were:
1… Glutamate neuro transmitters sending signals through brain and body nerves.
2… Valeryl-carnitine playing a role in converting organic and fatty acids to energy.
3… Kynurenine/tryptophan and citrulline/ornithine ratios affecting COVID-19 severity.
But we are still a long way from accurately predicting the emerging symptoms of Omicron COVID-19. However, the Nagourney Cancer Institute hopes doctors may be able to allocate medical resources more effectively, in future.
