What is a Standby UPS

The standby (SPS), also called off-line UPS, provides only the most basic features of a UPS. They provide surge protection and battery backup. The protected equipment is normally connected directly to incoming utility power.

When the incoming voltage falls below or rises above a predetermined level the SPS engages its internal DC-AC inverter, which is powered by an internal storage battery. The UPS offers an inexpensive alternative to a line interactive UPS for the protection of computer and telecom peripherals.

An SPS is the most basic form of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, where the load is supplied by the incoming mains supply without stabilisation or regulation while the mains supply remains within a specified input window.

The UPS unit tracks the mains supply voltage and frequency variations. When the incoming mains supply exceeds the specified quantity, it switches on the inverter to continue to supply power to the load. The inverter will switch on within a few milliseconds, which is usually longer than that encountered with a line-interactive UPS.

An SPS will reduce the incoming transients, spikes or electrical noise. These disturbances will not be completely prevented from passing through to the load and any large voltage spikes or transients that may exceed the input voltage setting will cause the UPS to switch to inverter power.

During short duration mains supply failures the UPS will continue to supply power to the load using the inverter. However, constant short duration supply failures will lead to unnecessary discharge of the battery.

Most standby UPS units only run for a short time of about 5-10 minutes, therefore the only option to achieve a longer runtime, as in the case of a blackout, is to get a larger UPS.

The battery charger will generally recharge the batteries to 80% within 8 hours to provide a sufficient battery level so that its ready for the next time its needed.

At UPS Battery Center we carry a wide assortment of UPS batteries, to fit any unit. However, we don’t want to just sell batteries, we want to inform and teach you about the amazing world of batteries, energy and power.
