Swap Out Batteries Under EU Spotlight

The European Union can be ahead of the pack when it comes to protecting consumer rights. Now it wants to turn the clock back to days when swap out batteries were the norm. The European parliament has approved a law enforcing readily replaceable batteries in all gadgets. Regulations are bound to follow, after 587 lawmakers voted for the legislation, with only nine opposing the change.

By When Will We See These Swap Out Batteries?

The European lawmakers would like to take the clock back to days when changing phone batteries was as simple as popping open the back cover. As Indian Express explains, the new law will prevent manufacturers from selling phones requiring special tools to access battery compartments.

However, and this will provide battery makers some respite, the new law will only come into effect in early 2027. Therefore, we have to wait and see how battery makers respond to this new European Union position. Essentially though, they will have to abandon the simple method of gluing parts together, in favor of a different solution that allows consumers to swap out their batteries without assistance.

How Are Phone Makers Likely To Respond?

Indian Express believes that phone makers are unlikely to produce products especially for the European market. Therefore, they may face the choice of implementing the new standard worldwide, or stopping supplying Europe. The bigger question could therefore be whether, and when other wealthy nations will follow suit.

We need to view the European decision in the context of environmental waste generally. The regulations are part of a bigger drive to pressure the tech industry to be more responsible about batteries in all appliances.

Other aspects of the new regulation include waste collection targets, simpler waste recycling, and moves towards a battery passport. While some might want to argue against enforcing swap out batteries as such, the overall program therefore appears commendable.
