Coronaviruses (CoV’s) are a large family of viruses that cause infections in the human respiratory system. This system includes our air passages, our lungs, our pulmonary vessels that transport oxygenated blood, and the muscles that enable us to breathe. Taking coronavirus precautions is therefore essential health care.
A General Introduction to Coronavirus Strains
Coronaviruses cause infections ranging from common colds to life-threatening double pneumonia. The most severe ones have caused Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemics.
When a new strain appears, health authorities name it novel (new) coronavirus, followed by the year they discovered it. Hence they first called Covid-2019 Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) 2019 before settling on the shorter name people can their minds around.
All coronavirus strains are zoonotic, meaning they can jump from animals to people through consumption. Civet cats gave humans SARS, while MERS came from dromedary camels.
WHO Advice on Taking Coronavirus Precautions
Exotic wildlife trafficking seems to be behind the emergence of new coronaviruses. This moves creatures from the wild into human habitats. They may be used for consumption as bush meat, or become exotic pets. Some people consume tusks, horns and bones without knowing they could just as well chew their fingernails.
Taking corona virus precautions is a matter of following basic human hygiene. This includes washing hands regularly and covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. If someone coughs or sneezes openly near you, cover your nose and mouth quick as quick as you can.
Keep six feet away from an infected person, and cook meat and eggs thoroughly and you should be okay according to World Health Organization WHO. However, if you develop a fever, cough, shortness of breath, or breathing difficulties put on a face mask and seek medical advice.
Severe cases can develop into pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death hence all these precautions.
