The Covid Virus Struggle in Our Minds

Our bodies, minds and spirits are in constant interaction with each other and the world beyond. Harm to one part affects another. If we are ill in bed for a while, we feel depressed. When we are feeling joyous, life’s aches and pains are easier to bear. We are halfway through the Reddit post that interests us so much. Today we explore the Covid virus struggle in our minds.

Stage One of the Covid Virus Struggle in Our Minds: Fear

We should not panic because panic is not rational. However, fear is a jolt in the right direction as the Reddit writer says. That’s because fear switches on the fight or flight reaction. We have nowhere to run. Therefore we must win the Covid-19 virus struggle in our minds. Because we will need a positive attitude if we enter quarantine or test positive.

However, we also have a second opponent to face which psychologists call ‘normalcy’. This is our natural tendency to assume adverse situations will improve of their own accord. This colleague of denial makes us think ‘it’s just a flu, there’s nothing to worry about’.

Stage Two in the Process: Behaving Sensibly

Acting rationally is our best defense. This implies holding back on fear by thinking things through sensibly. These are our likely scenarios:

1… The virus will not affect us personally, life will continue as normal

2… Our employer asks us to work from home for our own safety’s sake

3… We self-quarantine because we work with a person who tested positive

4… Our government orders our community to stay at home for three weeks

5… We become infected. Our health deteriorates. We are in hospital for a week

We felt a chill as we wrote that last sentence. Perhaps you did too. That’s not the way to win the Covid virus struggle in our minds. The way to win is to think proactively. We ought to prepare. We ought to put plans in place for what we believe is the most likely scenario for us.

About Author

I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
