Being born in a Glasgow, Scotland tenement to a bus driver and his wife in 1930 is not a dream introduction to the annals of science. However, June Dalziel Almeida née Hart persisted, and now finally has recognition as one of the world’s greatest virologists. That’s because her outstanding intellect was behind the discovery of the world’s first coronavirus in humans.
Tough Start Leads to the Discovery of the Worlds First Coronavirus
June Almeida had to leave school aged 16 because her family could not afford her continuing education. Nothing daunted, she kicked down the doors at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. There she secured a job as a histopathologist microscopically studying the physical evidence of diseases.
June Almeida married a Venezuelan artist in 1954. They moved to Toronto, Canada where she honed her skills on electron microscopes at Ontario Cancer Institute. However, St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London called her back in 1964, where she worked with British virologist David Tyrrell researching the common cold.
This Was Where Her Research into Viruses Began in Earnest
The discovery of the world’s first coronavirus began when scientists were studying nasal washings from volunteers in Salisbury, Wiltshire. This involved flushing out their noses and sinuses to gather samples to culture cold-associated viruses. They were however unsuccessful with one particular sample from a boarding school in Surrey.
They sent the sample to June Almeida who compared it to influenza viruses but noticed distinct differences. She later identified it as the world’s first coronavirus in humans, because of the characteristic crown or halo shape.
Thirteen years after death the discovery of the world’s first coronavirus in humans achieved new prominence. The Chinese used her method to identify the new virus Covid-19. And Prime Minister Boris Johnson recovered from his illness at the very same St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London.
