United Kingdom prime minister Boris Johnson is likely to ease COVID-19 mandates shortly. But this does not mean the UK enters a different COVID world completely. That’s because, from what we’ve heard he wants to shift the balance from state mandates to personal responsibility from Thursday going forward. Is the United Kingdom ahead of the curve, or is it being reckless we wonder?
Is United Kingdom Taking the Lead or Taking a Chance?
Certainly compliance has relaxed since Omicron become the dominant strain. Perhaps the real question should be whether this is the right moment to make a step change. The Guardian news channel says ‘some scientists and health experts’ are unsure, while the opposition Labor Party says ‘the war is not over yet’.
The prime minister seems to agree to an extent, although he is keen ‘to return most freedoms’ and ‘rein in public expenditure’. ‘I think it’s very important we should remain careful,’ he told The Guardian. ‘We’re certainly not asking people to throw caution to the winds. COVID remains a dangerous disease, particularly if you haven’t been vaccinated and if you’re vulnerable.
What Happens After UK Enters a Different COVID World?
The prime minister knows there are still people without vaccinations or boosters. None the less he is convinced ‘people should feel confident again and people should feel able to go back to work in the normal way. I do want to see our country really getting back on its feet … Now’s the moment for everybody to get their confidence back.’
However, as his vision of UK entering a different COVID world unfolds, he does add a word or two of caution. ‘I want to avoid non-pharmaceutical intervention in favor of vaccines’ he explains. ‘But I’m afraid you’ve got to be humble in the face of nature.’ We humbly hope he has the balance right.
