Very young infants with things stuck in their throats may vomit, drool, and refuse to eat. This is not good news for their tender young tissue. When curiosity gets the better of children, they can end up in an emergency room in a life-threatening situation.

The most frequent objects kids swallow are coin and button batteries according to Hindustan Times. These are relatively harmless if they pass through the system. However if a lithium penny battery gets stuck, it can hammer young flesh with a continuous short circuit. The problem is young children do not understand the difference between disc sweets, coins and penny batteries. And all they want to do is stay out of trouble.

Parents should remove the battery before allowing an unsupervised child to play with a toy. They should never leave flat batteries, coins, and sharp objects lying around. Possibly not candy either, to avoid compulsive snacking.

“Toys these days have small button batteries. These can be harmful if swallowed as they can erode the oesophagus and even cause death,” says a paediatrics head. Parents should remove toy batteries before allowing children to play alone. Tantrums are unpleasant, but better than a late night visit to a hospital.

We understand this may not be the topic you expected when you visited our site. However, as lead-acid battery manufacturers, it is our duty to tell you the dangers when kids swallow lithium-ion batteries. Even though lithium-ion is a different chemistry and our batteries are too large to swallow.
