Towards Longer Lasting Lead-Acid Batteries in Future

Lead-acid batteries are one of the oldest energy storage systems, and date back well over a century. Despite this, they remain one of the world’s most important rechargeable battery technologies. Although we believe we need to move towards longer lasting lead-acid batteries for sustainability’s sake.

Lead-Acid Batteries Play a Major Role

Well-founded scientific research confirms our opinion that lead acid batteries continue to play a major role. This is despite increasing competition from newer chemistries. We believe this is because  they are affordable, reliable, and supported by well-established manufacturing and recycling industries.

For these reasons lead-acid batteries have extensive uses in vehicles, backup power systems, industrial equipment, and renewable energy installations.

Why We Need Longer Lasting Lead Batteries

We need to look towards longer lasting lead-acid batteries, because their relatively limited lifespan remains a challenge. We have known for a while that standard chemical changes inside these batteries may reduce their ability to store and deliver energy over time.

Aggravations limiting their average five-year life span include extreme  temperature, depth of discharge, and poor maintenance.

Managing Used Lead-Acid Batteries Responsibly

We move on from looking towards longer lasting lead-acid batteries, to recycling them responsibly. This is essential because they contain lead and sulfuric acid, which can harm the environment if released into soil or water.

Fortunately, lead-acid batteries are among the most recyclable products in the world. Around 95% of their materials, including lead, plastic casings, and sulfuric acid, is recovered and reused.

Why Should I Bother With Recycling My Batteries?

Effective recycling not only reduces pollution, but also conserves valuable resources, and supports a circular economy. Besides, it keeps the cost of your next battery down. This makes recycling a winner in two ways. It’s easy to do. Leave or exchange your old battery with a high street battery supplier. They should know what to do.

We wrote this article to highlight new technologies improving battery lifespan and end-of-life management. These approaches should reduce waste, lower costs to consumers, and improve performance making them a winner for all of us!

About Author

Electricity has always intrigued me. I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
