Scientists from University of East Anglia in England published an article on The Conversation on May 23, 2022. Their piece describes four unusual COVID-19 symptoms we may have touched on previously. None of these are life threatening, but they may be the only discernible symptoms so we decide to post an update here.
Four Symptoms of COVID-19 You May Find Unusual
Skin Lesions
A skin lesion is any damage or abnormal change in the tissue of an organism, usually caused by disease or trauma. A 2021 study found 20% of UK patients had rashes, but no other symptoms. Some involved COVID toes.
COVID Nails
Our finger nails can reflect we are ill or stressed. In the case COVID, this may display as horizontal indentations and lines, and red half-moon patterns. These could appear in the first few weeks after infection as nails grow.
Hair Loss
A January 2022 Brazil study revealed hair loss was 48% likely among 6,000 COVID patients. The symptoms usually appeared one month after the initial infection. They were commonest among severe cases but the hair grew back later.
Tinnitus and Hearing Loss
COVID-19 may affect inner ear cells in a manner similar to flu and measles. A review study involving 560 people found hearing loss in 3.1% of patients. Tinnitus (ringing sounds) were slightly more likely at 4.5%.
Observations and Reservations From Our Side
The four unusual symptoms on our list today may indicate COVID. However, this is not always the case, and there are other possible reasons. If you show any of these signs may we suggest you have a rapid COVID test, and take medical advice is this is positive? Remember, symptoms may be mild at first, but they can develop into serious disease.
