Let’s face the facts. People are railing against staying home, wearing masks, and queuing for vaccines and tests. Even vaccinated people are beginning to wonder whether it was worth it, given the spate of breakthrough infections. Protesters in national capitals are saying enough is enough. However, sober reflection suggests we should not give in to COVID-19 now.
Good Reasons Why We Should Never Give Up
The Conversation suggested persistence will lead to a ‘better post-pandemic future’ on February 6, 2022. Their scribe said Omicron infections may be milder, but the long-term consequences are uncertain. Moreover, some hospitals face short-staffing due to infected healthcare workers. And our schools and businesses are under-resourced too.
We should not give in to COVID-19, now they continue, because we would be far worse off if we did not have vaccines. Long COVID with sometimes-shocking mental consequences is more common than we may think. Moreover, The Conversation says ‘we are also seeing some evidence that children are more likely to develop Type 1 Diabetes after COVID-19’.
Therefore We Should Not Give In to COVID-19 Now
Previous pandemics including Cholera and Yellow Fever became milder endemics, after people learned to take sensible health precautions. Even cold- and influenza infection-rates are milder, because many of us socially distance and wear face masks. Furthermore, those strategies should be effective against other airborne diseases too.
Many of us also learned better hand and face hygiene, which is an effective counter to most bacterial infections. Our over-populated planet is shrinking our social distances, and we therefore need to be more careful.
If we give up on our COVID prevention measures, we also open our doors to a raft of other infections. We should keep using those tools, the Conversation reasons, to protect the more vulnerable members of our communities. And to allow our businesses to operate safely, and accelerate our return to an adjusted normal.
