A high school by the name of Nantyr Shores Secondary in the town of Innisfil is taking things to the next level with their Enviroventure program. The Nantyr Shores Secondary School is nurturing students, through this program, with the knowledge that they can be leaders of change. The program is led by Mr. Gaynik, a teacher at the school who tries to teach the students ways in which they can adapt and change the current climate for the better. The students here recognize that climate change is happening. However, they are hopeful that solutions can be found and that the effects can be slowed down.

What Is Enviroventure?
As described on their websites, Enviroventure is a multi-credit program offered by the Specialists High Skills Major (SHSM) program that is “an authentic set of outdoor experiences designed to foster leadership, character development, and environmental stewardship.” The program runs during the second semester of each year and it is a 4 credit program. It involves indoor and outdoor activities that differ from day to day. The students apart of the Enviroventure program try to find local solutions for their problems such as building different home models that are more sustainable. In addition, they also attend conferences about climate change to learn more and to discuss solutions. The recent one they went to was the Change Your World conference at York University!

Trips
The students at Nantyr Shores Secondary School learn a lot from hands on experience. Many of these experiences happen while they are out on trips. Some of the trips these students partake in with their program include:
-Navigation trip in Oro-Medonte
-Ministry of Natural Resource 3-day camping trip
-White Mountain National Park – New Hampshire, USA 9-day hiking expedition.
In addition, the students go on many other trips that help introduce the students to the great outdoors and how to conserve them. As the program has many expeditions and trips, there are fees involved. To help lower their costs, the students take part in many fundraisers. For example, the Boston Pizza “Server for the Night” event where 10% of the restaurant’s earning for one night go to fund the students in the Enviroventure program!
These students deserve all the funding they could get as they are trying to make changes that many people neglect so round of applause for them!
