CTV News relayed a World Health Organization (WHO) alert on July 1, 2021. The core of this is WHO warns of a third Europe wave looming. And once again, it seems the people, and not the virus must shoulder responsibility. Whatever the case, the reality is the ten-week decline in coronavirus infections in Europe has ended, and a surge may follow soon.
The Immediate Future Hangs on Fans at Euro 2020 Stadiums
The UEFA Euro 2020 football tournament was pended due to the coronavirus outbreak, but is being attempted during 2021. Reuters news channel says crowds at Euro 2020 football stadiums and in pubs and bars are causing infections to rise. The WHO confirms their behavior in host cities is alarming.
Apparently, and this is what we have heard, new cases in Europe rose by 10% last week. We don’t want to sit in judgement over sports fans. However, the WHO says this trend is driven by crowd mixing, travel and easing of social restrictions. And it adds we need to look beyond the stadiums.
Looking Beyond as WHO Warns of a Third Europe Wave Looming
‘We need to look at how people get there,’ says WHO senior emergency officer, Catherine Smallwood. ‘Are they in large crowded convoys of buses? And when they leave the stadiums, are they going into crowded bars and pubs to watch the matches? ‘It is these small continuous events that are driving the spread of the virus,’ she adds.
Meanwhile, Reuters says German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer came down hard on UEFA organizing the competition. Apparently, he called their decision to admit large crowds to matches ‘utterly irresponsible’. No wonder the WHO warns of a third Europe wave looming, if this is the case.
