Samsung Group has come a long way since it founded as a trading company in 1938. Since then, the South Korean multinational manufacturing conglomerate joined the list of the world’s ten most valuable brands. Success comes at a cost though, and some innovations are expensive. Take Samsung’s 600 mile, 9 minute charge electric vehicle battery for example.

It sure seems to be the case from what we hear. Samsung has been working quietly on this project for years, but provided an update at the recent 2024 SNE Battery Day in Seoul. There, Samsung revealed it had begun pilot production of its 600 mile, 9 minute charge electric vehicle battery.

Meanwhile, the Samsung company spokesperson continued, they had sent samples for testing by potential customers who were positive about them. This implies that the Samsung product, with a claimed 20-year life, is coming within reach of customers who can afford it.

The Samsung 20-year lifespan electric vehicle battery is an all-solid-state product. This means it should be more compact, weigh less, and be safer than lithium-ion alternatives. This presents a ground-breaking opportunity to roll-out mass electric transport, but there is a catch.

This catch is these 600 mile, 9 minute charge electric vehicle solid-state batteries will cost more than run-of-the-mill lithium-ion offerings. Average consumers will therefore  have to wait a while, before they benefit from doing away with liquid electrolytes that could catch fire in collisions.

Interesting Engineering confirms that the Samsung product has an ‘energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram’. This is nearly twice the 270 watt-hour rating of regular electric vehicle batteries, and this could double driving range. But that, in turn, will necessitate more powerful charging stations.

Meanwhile, those of us with limited budgets will have to wait patiently for mass-production to bring prices down to our level. We have heard that Samsung is also working on less expensive lithium iron phosphate and cobalt-free batteries. So there may be light on the horizon for the rest of us too.
