The primary difference between a single-cycle and a re-chargeable battery is that single-cycle ones can only take a charge once.  This happens at the factory. Beyond that, the technology is similar. Since batteries gradually discharge even when not in use, it pays to purchase them fresh. In this post, we explore how single cycle batteries go flat while we are using them.

All Batteries Have the Same Basic Components

The only way to extend primary battery life is to use them less. For example, we could decide not to leave a single-cycle battery radio playing when we are not there.

Our sealed, deep cycle lead-acid batteries recycle many times before their useful life is over. It is no wonder lead-acid accounts for such a significant part of battery sales worldwide.

Getting back to batteries generally, there are many different types. However, all transform chemical reactions inside their cases to electricity on their terminals waiting to power devices. All batteries also have three key components, namely negative and positive electrodes, and an electrolyte that facilitates the chemical reaction.

These electrodes may be side-by-side, or at opposite ends as is the case of AA and AAA batteries. The actual arrangement is often a matter of mechanical convenience.

A circuit forms when both positive and negative electrodes share a common connection through an object. This object should have sufficient resistance to prevent rapid battery discharge

Once the connection establishes, electrochemical events occur inside the battery. Ions flow in one direction, and electrons in the other. Even when batteries are not connected, a shadow of the reaction continues.

This process cannot last forever. In the case of single cycle batteries, the reaction progressively degrades the battery’s ability to produce electrons and ions until it is flat. Rechargeable batteries, on the other hand, are able to accept a fresh supply of energy and keep going longer. Thus, it makes sense to use these in critical applications, especially now we know how single cycle batteries inevitably go flat, no matter what we do.
