COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease that can affect our ability to breathe. It has killed 567,092 people in the U.S., according to John Hopkins University. We have vaccines that help control it. However, like all medications they do affect a small minority of us with side effects. Among these are potentially deadly blood clots that also appear naturally without COVID-19 vaccines. But these vaccine blood clots are a very rare side effect, says EU regulator European Medicines Agency.
It’s a Matter of the Benefits Versus the Risk
Each time we drive our autos we run the risk of an accident. A mechanism could fail, we could lose control, or someone else could ride into us. It’s a very small risk, of course, and that’s why we take the chance instead of walking to our destination. In other words, the benefits to us outweigh the risks.
The benefits certainly outweigh the risks with COVID-19 vaccines. Countries with high vaccination rates are seeing their infection and death rates tumble. While those that have lagged behind their programs find themselves in much more precarious space.
Blood Clots are a Very Rare Side Effect in US Too
Only 8 out of a group of 7 million people in the U.S. who received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine developed blood clots. Just one of them died. That’s a rate of 0.00011% and 0.00001% respectively. But our risk of dying from COVID-19 in the U.S. is 1.79% according to Centers for Disease Control. We know which chance we would rather take.
The European Union, and our own U.S. regulators are inclining to the same opinion with regard to the Astra-Zeneca vaccine too. The true facts on the table and in the charts confirm blood clots are a very rare side effect. We should not allow anti-vaxxers to confuse us with selective information. Life is too precious for that.
