The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is paused, not cancelled Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN Health on April 15, 2021. America’s top infectious disease expert assured reporter Christina Maxouris it should be available again in days, or weeks. ‘I doubt very seriously if we’re talking about weeks to months,’ he added. ‘It’s just a measure how seriously we take safety even though it’s a rare event.’
Safety is the U.S. Government’s Primary Consideration
The otherwise successful Johnson & Johnson vaccine is paused, not cancelled after it threw out a very small number of blood clot cases. This is a rare, but severe condition that can be life threatening without treatment. Centers for Disease Control declined to make recommendations at the time, until it had an opportunity to examine the data.
Dr. Anthony Fauci had a message for Christina Maxouris to share with her CNN readers. ‘If anybody’s got a doubt that ‘oh, they may not be taking safety very seriously’ this is an affirmation. Confirmation that safety is a primary consideration at Food and Drug Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s why we did it.’
Johnson Vaccine Paused for Review Not Cancelled
Dr. Beth Bell is a clinical professor at University of Washington in Seattle. She told a media conference there was sufficient information to make an evidence-based decision. However, she felt they would be able to gather the missing data quickly. And then reconfirm the benefit/risk balance.
Blood clots are a very rare condition, she told CNN’s reporter Christina Maxouris. But we still need to understand the risk with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and confirm how low this is. The pause will allow American experts to investigate a potential link. And in particular determine whether any populations are more susceptible.
