Slate.Com has a reputation for publishing counter-intuitive pieces that challenge convention. That’s because it wants to help us understand, and interpret the world through different views according to Wikipedia. They published a piece suggesting COVID transmission from a distance could be more likely than CDC previously conceded. The main thrust is we should not feel secure beyond the six foot threshold.
COVID Can Transmit From More Than Six Feet Away
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has shifted its position that most infections occur from close contact, according to Slate.Com. The counter-intuitive website’s post on May 8, 2021 claims this is a change in the agency’s stance. Since CDC now says ‘It has repeatedly documented instances of the virus spreading through air to people, who are more than six feet away under certain preventable circumstances.’
We don’t believe there is merit in pointing fingers on this one. To us, it’s more a question of what next, if transmission from a distance is more likely. And the first lesson to us, is to remember our protection when attending ‘super spreader events’, like rallies, celebrations, and sports meets.
Poor Ventilation Makes Transmission from a Distance More Likely
That’s the gist of it really, and here we are on the side of Slate.Com. That’s because it stands to reason good ventilation in indoor (and outdoor) space is key to preventing transmission of the virus. Now, in our opinion that’s in the remit of the user.
We can decide to linger in poorly ventilated spaces. Or we can don our masks, vote with our feet, and vacate that space as soon as we can. COVID-19 reminds us we travel through life largely on our own. We cannot rely on a ‘nanny state’ to always keep us safe, because that’s our job too.
