BYD has forged ahead of Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer. But the Chinese company is not resting on its laurels, because it plans to market an ultra-fast battery by the end of 2024. After all the rumors has somebody finally got this right? We share news of this super-fast product, and just how fast is fast.
What Ultra-Fast Battery Charging Means at BYD
When BYD speaks of 6C charging, this multiplier means ‘six times the capacity of the battery’ according to Car News China. So, if we had a 1,000 milliamp-hour battery, just for example, we could charge it with a current six-times as great.
All things being equal, this means in theory we could charge that battery in a sixth of an hour, or ten minutes. But we would need an ultra-fast battery to achieve that. One that could withstand such a burst of power.
And of course we would also need a battery charger capable of delivering that burst of power. We understand that such facilities are scarce, but the BYD initiative is none-the-less significant and we should note it.
More About The Ultra-Fast BYD Battery
BYD says its new 6C battery will use lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry. This means their ultra-fast battery will use lithium-iron-phosphate for its cathode, and graphitic carbon with aluminum foil backing for its anode, making it a cobalt-free product.
The World Needs Super-Charging Batteries Now
Developments like this are extremely important, as Western consumers accustomed to instant gratification, shy away from slow-charging electric vehicles. We can’t force them to embrace the new technology, even as we begin to sense global warming around us.
We hope that the BYD breakthrough encourages a greater sense of urgency among electric vehicle battery manufacturers in the West. It is time to move away from slow-charging lithium-ion chemistry, trade in our gasoline cars, and embrace the future, together.
