Our hearts go out to a young man, who lost his life in yet another New York City battery fire. Once again, the cause was someone charging e-bike batteries in their apartment. One solution might be for every one of us to be on battery fire watch, and think for each other first. But this would have to apply to people purchasing batteries, people charging batteries, and the rest of us for the idea to work.
Why Be on Battery Fire Watch No Matter Where We Are?
The fire that robbed the young man of his life began in an apartment in Harlem, New York City, on February 26, 2024. Six residents decided to recharge off-brand e-bike batteries in their apartment, according to a recent update.
Now if those residents had chosen to be on battery fire watch, instead of leaving the batteries on their own, then the likelihood of that fire breaking out should have been far lower. It is all too easy to blame substandard lithium-ion batteries for the blaze. But the batteries were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The fire might still have happened if the men charged the e-bike batteries in an open, ventilated space. But the young man in his prime at age 27 would still be alive. This is why we need a more aware population, to fight the scourge of e-bike lithium-ion battery fires.
What Went Wrong After the Men Left Their Apartment?
Several residents reported the regular safety infringement to the apartment landlord on several previous occasions. One even forwarded their concern via the 311 emergency channel, which referred it on to the Department of Transportation.
However, The City news channel reports that “neither the landlord or any city agency did anything in response to the 311 call, or any of the other complaints”.
The apartment residents heard a ”big bang” in the early hours of the morning, “followed immediately by smoke filling hallways and blocking escape routes.” We don’t believe law enforcement can prevent these fires breaking out on their own. We all need to be on battery fire watch, and especially whenever we charge batteries.
