Power Banks and Lithium Batteries

Power banks and lithium batteries are an increasing concern for airlines world-wide. We investigate why portable battery packs are falling out of favor, and conclude that the airlines’ stance is reasonable. Many airlines insist that passengers keep their power banks with them on flights. But now MSN advises that the Indian aviation regulator has banned their use outright.

Concerns Over Power Banks With Lithium Batteries

Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) outlines the concerns in a media release we link to below. They advise consumers to note the growing number of recalled power banks, and their potential to cause serious burns and property damage.

Consumers use power banks containing lithium-ion batteries – or lithium-polymer batteries – to charge mobile phones, and other portable devices while traveling. There were more that nine portable power bank recalls in Australia during the past year.

At the time of issuing the ACCC media release, approximately 34,000 of these recalled devices had not been returned by customers. It is reasonable to assume that more than a few of these are still being used by airline passengers.

The question arises what should airlines do about the risks attached to power banks with these batteries? Should they allow passengers to use them in their aircraft, or should they ban their use outright? The Indian aviation regulator recently decided to ban their use.

Indian Regulator Bans Use of Power Banks

MSN confirmed the aviation regulator’s decision on January 4, 2026. The prohibition includes using power banks ‘to charge phones, or gadgets during flights’. They base their decision on the fire hazards ‘posed by lithium batteries’.

The regulator’s decision follows a number of global incidents of batteries overheating, and / or causing fires on aircraft. Passengers in Indian airspace may no longer use their power banks to charge their devices, even via aircraft USB supply points.
