Artemis was the daughter of the Greek sky god, and in charge of nature, childbirth, wild life, and the moon. Batteries, on the other hand are more mundane, although they do provide us with take-anywhere, portable electricity. It’s no wonder then there are batteries on their way to the lunar south pole in the Artemis moon rocket. What else could we have expected!
Lunar South Pole Next Destination for NASA Batteries
NASA teams are excitedly preparing for the launch of the first giant rocket in the program. The ultimate goal is to establish a base camp, allowing robots and astronauts to explore and move human understanding outward. However, the first flight will be a test to launch the empty command capsule, and return it safely to Earth.
The great rocket ship is at the assembly building, where engineers are making final adjustments after testing propulsion systems. They have activated several batteries to power the rocket boosters, and the interim cryogenic propulsion stage to flick the command capsule out of Moon’s gravity for the return journey to Earth.
They have also charged the secondary batteries for the stage adapter, which will send micro cube satellites on independent missions. These and all the other secondary payloads will also depend on batteries for their tasks.
Exciting News about NASA SABERS Battery Project
NASA is moving electric aviation forward, in addition to sending batteries on their way to the lunar south pole. It’s search for solid-state-architecture batteries, with enhanced recharge-ability and safety (SABERS) is at the heart of this. While its strategy is to create a safer battery by using ‘brand-new materials and novel construction methods’.
NASA plans to develop a solid state battery that has significantly higher energy than the lithium-ion batteries they currently use. This battery also would ‘not lose capacity over time, catch fire, or endanger passengers if something went wrong’, they explain.
