Data Center Energy Demand Escalates Rapidly

Data centers in the United States are a growing business, in terms of a Bloomberg Intelligence report. The third party that relayed the information to us, says that artificial intelligence is driving exponential data growth. This new spike in data center energy activity will add a significant layer, to the task of implementing renewable energy world wide.

Why Is Data Center Energy Demand So Significant?

The Techerati website explains that the surge in artificial intelligence could grow data center energy consumption tenfold, by 2030. And furthermore, this could account for over 15% of total U.S. energy demand at that point. But we would like to suggest the following definitions before we continue :

  • Data centers are structures housing computer systems often for third parties, and associated telecommunication equipment and battery storage. This equipment generates significant heat, which requires high-energy cooling systems.
  • Artificial intelligence is a technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human thought. This concept embraces all of learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity, autonomy, and more.

Both those two systems are energy-rich, and traditionally draw their electricity from mainline grids. However, data centers also rely on solar power, battery storage, and natural gas to tide them over during outages. Recharging storage batteries when the power returns, increases the power load further.

The Impact of This Significant Growth Going Forward

Techerati estimates that data center energy draw was just 3% of the United States total consumption in 2022. Growing this share to 15% by 2030 will increase the pressure on energy grids, at a time when the world is trying to be more energy efficient.

Artificial intelligence data centers seem set to become strategic resources with ‘must-have-now’ demand. Storage batteries are fast becoming a critical resource in the data center energy demand-supply mix. We live in an exciting time of ongoing change. Where would we be now, without batteries to carry us forward into the future?
