The British cherish their green fields that industrial activity has not touched. The atmosphere therefore was tense, when Bradford representatives met in West Yorkshire, England in April this year. The proposal on the table was to plant 106 giant new batteries in a quiet field, each some 10 foot high and 7 feet wide. To add to the disruption, 106 heavy goods vehicles would deliver them down a peaceful country lane to an energy facility.
Would Locals Benefit from 106 Giant New Batteries?
The Bradford community governs itself by democratic principles that seem far removed from the Ukraine energy crisis. Surplus wind and solar energy stored there would be released to the national grid to supplement energy shortfalls.
Several other structures would complement the proposed installation. They would include a 13-foot-high earth embankment to screen the development from neighbors. Although the giant new batteries would still be visible from afar for the project lifespan of 50 years.
What Direct Benefit Is This for the People of Bradford?
A logical reaction might be ‘not in my backyard, put it somewhere else please’. However, as the applicant explained, recent hostilities in the east had resulted in energy shortfalls. And this in turn highlighted the need to greater independence using renewable resources.
The country needs to take energy more seriously, the spokesperson continued. The rest of the world is moving faster, and these giant new batteries are part of this infrastructure. Moreover, the 106 mega batteries will contribute to saving as much as 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year.
We have no doubt this debate will continue for a while. The site is adjacent to the Bradford West substation. “I would rather see this on a brownfield site,” one councilor declared. “But we are where we are, and exceptional times dictate the decision”.
