Global Wind Day is celebrated annually on 15th June across the world. It is organized by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). The day is made memorable by visits to wind farms, wind energy awareness campaigns, wind workshops, wind parades, and other such events worldwide.
How Did It All Start
Wind Day was first organized by EWEA in 2007 to raise awareness among about wind energy and its immense potential. National wind energy organizations of 18 European countries participated in the inaugural celebration. By 2009 GWEC joined the team of organizers and Global Wind Day reached 1 million people in 40 countries.
Celebrating Global Wind Day
Besides national associations, industry bigwigs like wind turbine makers also participate in hundreds of public functions organized on this day. Many companies install small-scale wind turbines in cities to train people in how they works and to bust myths. Many wind farms open their gates to the public who can visit the farms and enjoy while enhancing their knowledge of wind energy. Many workshops are held by green crusaders to tell people about this clean form of energy.
Celebrating Wind Power
Global Wind Day events are not restricted to June 15th. They go on weeks preceding it as well as afterwards. For example, the photo competition organized in Turkey was held in May. The exhibition and awards function will be held on 15th June.
Global Wind Day is our day to reflect on our choices for energy sources. Do we want to leave a big carbon footprint behind us, or use a clean, green and renewable source of energy instead? What’s your choice?
