The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reinforced an LG solar battery recall notice on November 20, 2023. This warns consumers of “… fire risks associated with recalled LG solar lithium-ion batteries, which are installed in solar energy systems across the country”. The notice affects some 8,000 battery packs, of which some 6,000 are still in unidentified locations.
Recall of LG Solar Batteries Potentially Able to Over Heat
LG’s ‘RESU’ ESS Batteries pose a fire danger, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. The regulatory body cautions that lithium-ion batteries, “ … risk overheating and this could start a house fire. This could potentially injure or even kill occupants, as well as causing property damage.”

A lack of visible branding in some cases, compounds the confusion that may follow in consumer minds. The official LG advisory recommends householders check individual solar batteries to determine whether their model is under recall. Products affected by the LG solar battery recall include the following:
- RESU3.3, RESU6.5, RESU10, RESU13, RESU7H Type R.
- RESU10H Type C, RESU10H Type R, RESU10H Type R Secondary.
- S/A Gen2 1P (EM048063P3S2, EM048063P3S4, EM048063P3S5).
- S/A Gen2 2P (EM048126P3S7, EM048126P3S8).

All the ‘RESU’ battery types should be in LG-branded systems. However, the affected Gen2 batteries may be in any of the following products:
- SolaX Power Station, SolaX X-Cabinet, Opal Storage, VARTA Pulse Neo.
- Redback SH5000, Red Earth Sunrise, Red Earth Drop Bear, Eguana Evolve.
Promoting Battery Safety in Your Home
Follow the advice in the LG recall notice that we link to below. Identify your battery serial number. If this identifier is included in the LG solar battery recall list, then:
- Immediately switch off your battery, and DO NOT turn it on again.
- Contact your battery installer, or LG South Australia for advice.
- You will have the option of waiting for a replacement, or a refund.
Our lead-acid batteries use a water-based electrolyte that cannot ignite a fire. If anything it would extinguish it, although we don’t recommend trying this as it contains chemicals.
