Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare, rapid-onset autoimmune disease, in which a disorder in the patient’s immune system damages their nerves. This can lead to muscle weakness, and even paralysis without treatment. But countermeasures neutralize the rogue antibodies, or filter them out the bloodstream. A report from Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh describes a link from COVID to Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
What We Previously Knew About Guillain-Barre Syndrome
It’s common knowledge – among medical scientists at least – that the condition may occasionally occur after certain influenza vaccinations. It also features, very rarely as a side effect after Johnson and Johnson and Oxford-Astra-Zeneca vaccines. Government agencies withdrew approval of the Zimelidine anti-depressant, after reports this also induced Guillain-Barre Syndrome on occasions.

New Evidence of the Link between Guillain-Barre Syndrome and COVID
Smitha Mundasad writing for BBC News reports Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh scientists reviewed 32 million patient records. This evidence from National Health Service files contained critical data concerning adverse events linked to COVID vaccines.
They compared the history of two classes of patients. These had either (a) received their first COVID-19 vaccine within the past month. Or (b) were within the first month of a positive coronavirus test. They looked for a variety of medical conditions, as their artificial intelligence software delivered these results.
Within a Month of the First COVID-19 Vaccine Shot
1… There were 38 more cases than the norm for Guillain-Barre Syndrome, per 10 million patients after one Oxford-Astra-Zeneca shot.
2… There were also 60 more cases than the norm for Hemorrhagic Stroke (brain bleeding), per 10 million patients after one Pfizer shot.
Within a Month of a Positive Coronavirus Test
1… But, the National Health Service data revealed 145 more cases than the norm for Guillain-Barre Syndrome per 10 million patients.
2… Moreover, they also uncovered 123 extra brain inflammation disorders, and 163 more immune conditions affecting nerves and muscles per 10 million patients.
Therefore, the researchers say there is a link from COVID to Guillain-Barre Syndrome. However, the risk is far higher among people who contract the coronavirus disease.
