Please Put Loose Batteries in Your Cabin Luggage

No mention of the word lithium in the title? Nope, that was not a typo. Sure, we know the small risk of batteries exploding generally relates to lithium. However, please do this quick test without physically checking, before reading on. How many of your devices DO NOT have lithium batteries? It is best to put all your loose batteries in your cabin luggage regardless of type, because mistakes do happen.

A Quick Recap Why Batteries Belong in Cabin Luggage

Lithium is highly flammable material. Geological museums display it under water, because it catches alight in fresh air. However, lithium is usually quite safe when used correctly inside its housing. Problems may develop due to manufacturing defects or misuse.

When we overcharge a lithium battery, we stress it. It can become noticeably warmer and start to overheat. This damages the structure and makes it more likely to fail. If your phone or laptop overheats when you are NOT charging it, turn it off, and remove the battery. Then inspect it very carefully for any defects. If you find anything unusual, seek specialist advice.

Lithium batteries catch fire because of a short circuit. This can happen naturally during aging when dendrites spreads from one electrode to the other inside the battery. The resultant short circuit heats the battery until it bursts and the lithium inside catches fire.

Sure, that was a basic explanation but you get the idea. Experts believe it is safe to store a battery in a matching device in an aircraft hold, because the circuit has a matching resistance to accept the gradual discharge. However, we must keep all loose batteries in our cabin luggage so somebody notices the burning smell before the fire. A sudden jolt of an airplane in an air pocket can rearrange the contents of a suitcase or a bag.

Something as simple as a nail file could rest on both terminals and start a chain reaction. You could be on that aircraft. Your best precaution is to insulate both battery terminals BEFORE you put them in your cabin luggage. A short length of electrical insulation tape will do the job, and help keep everybody safe.
