We decided to find out more about the GAC solid-state battery technology, that we touched on in an earlier article. We confirm that the extensive benefits apparently include high energy density, and safety and thermal stability. Other advantages worthy of mention are a novel electrode design, longer cycle life, and several more improved performance parameters.
More About Five GAC Solid-State Achievements
- HIGH ENERGY DENSITY – GAC claims some 400 watt-hour per kilogram storage. This is 60% better than many advanced liquid lithium-ion batteries. If GAC maintains this capacity in production, then this could equate to a 625 mile / 1,000 kilometer driving range.
- SAFETY AND THERMAL STABILITY – the design incorporates ‘a high-strength, dense composite electrolyte membrane’. This factor suggests robust resistance to thermal stress as high as 200°C / 390°F, as well as resistance to puncturing and cutting. This enhanced safety standard is apparently thanks to a veneer preventing dendrite growth.
- NOVEL APPROACH TO ELECTRODES – The anode is a spongy silicon material, with a few tweaks added. This combination delivers greater energy storage than graphite, and is teamed with a high capacity cathode. The electrolyte, for its part, is a hybrid, solid-state composite blending oxide and sulfide materials, according to Tech Node.
- CYCLE LIFE AND DURABILITY – From the above it is not unreasonable to assume that the GAC solid-state battery will be able to recharge many times, and last at least as long as its more powerful competition. Although at the moment, we must rely on laboratory data for these assumptions.
- OTHER PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS – PC Auto suggests the driving range could even exceed 625 miles / 1,000 kilometers ‘for some models’. And finally for now, China News hints at a ‘wider operating temperate range with better performance at extremes’.
Pulling the Threads Together from What We Know
We regularly report on battery research in our blog, much of which progress comes from China. The claims that we mention here remind us of these academic achievements. It’s therefore likely that much of GAC’s solid-state technology is firmly rooted in proven scientific fact.
