Swiss company Roche has developed a test to find out if a particular person had Covid-19 previously. Medical regulators in the United States, Europe and England have already approved its use. The technology searches for antibodies that might indicate some immunity. This new antibody test is a positive development, and may be the first one with real potential.
New Antibody Test is a Positive Development Where Others Failed
The rush to get to market has produced unreliable tests in the past. However, multinational F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, founded 1896 enjoys high stature in the health industry with over 94,000 workers. Therefore, we are inclined to believe its claim of 100% accuracy where the person previously had the disease.
Moreover and this is equally important, Roche says the test gives a correct result 99.8% of the time, if the person did not have the disease previously. Their new antibody test is therefore a positive development that we urgently need at this time. However it does not confirm whether a previous patient is, or is not immune.
The Place of the Roche Test in the Covid Jigsaw Puzzle
James Gallagher writing in BBC warns against indiscriminate use of the test. It’s a great way, he says, to gain a better understanding of the true spread of the epidemic. However, he strongly warns against using it to speed lifting the lock down.
That’s because having antibodies doesn’t guarantee the person cannot fall ill again, and even innocently pass the coronavirus to other people. Swab tests are still the best way to counter this possibility, he believes.
The new antibody test may be a positive development. And an important milestone on the road to get to grips with the virus’ secrets. However, the World Health Organization continues to warn against using ‘immunity passports’ to ease lockdowns. We shall have to wait and see which way this one flows.
