The Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) is a branch of the UL organization, that certifies batteries meet safety standards. The FSRI recently issued a public safety announcement, reminding us how to treat devices containing lithium-ion batteries. Their PSA recommends we stay in charge of battery safety over the festive season, by using, charging, and storing our devices and batteries wisely.
5 Essential Steps to Stay in Charge of Lithium-Ion Batteries
- Only purchase electrical devices containing lithium-ion batteries, that are listed, or certified safe by the UL organization. Never purchase anything solely on the basis of a suggestion on social media.
- Handle all electrical devices thoughtfully, and in accordance with the manufacturer’s written instructions. If a device has rechargeable batteries, always use the adapter that came with it. Allow for the fact that a battery can overheat. Have a plan what to do if it does.
- Never leave a battery charging unattended. Check for any signs of damage first, and remain alert for unusual warmth, hissing, or popping sounds. Stop charging the battery right away if you notice any of these signs. Wispy smoke could indicate the immediate danger of fire.
- Always remove a spent, or suspect battery from a device, isolate the terminals, and hand it in at an official recycling point. Never, ever take the easy way out by dumping a spent battery in the garbage. Act responsibly with all electrical equipment.
- This is not the time for heroics if you see wispy smoke, or fire coming from a device or battery, or hear hissing or popping sounds. Vacate the area right away. Phone for emergency assistance immediately.
Share these five points with your colleagues, friends, and family too. You could help them avoid becoming lithium-ion battery casualties, and stay in charge of battery safety this Christmas.
