Will Americans Be Wearing Masks in 2022?

To be honest, nobody knows when this pandemic will end. At best, the answer lies in medical science, how the virus pans out, and how we behave. USA Today cites Dr. Anthony Fauci saying it’s ‘possible Americans will still be wearing masks in 2022’. However, not everybody agrees about much concerning this contentious topic. And that’s part of the frustration we deal with day by day.

Could the Pandemic Be Mostly Gone by April?

Marty Makary, who teaches at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health inclines that way. He bases his case on the rapidly declining infection rate. He also believes the high U.S. death rate indicates a higher immunity level than recognized. Moreover, there could be 150 million vaccinated residents by end March 2021.

Apparently his colleagues agree with his position but are silent, because ‘they don’t want people to become complacent’. However, Marty says boldly ‘There is reason to think the country is racing toward an extremely low level of infection’. We hope he is correct, because many Americans are fed up with wearing masks, and are breaking health carer trust.

How Would Americans React to Wearing Masks in 2022?

It’s an open question in a nation where many disregard health guidance, because the death rate has numbed them. On February 21, 2021 Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared to soften his position.

That was when he said America could be ‘approaching a degree of normality by the end of the year’. However, this assumed speeding up vaccine distribution, and continuing to wear masks and socially distancing.

This pandemic is a tale of individual tragedy, of lives cut short ahead of hopes. We should continue doing what we can to help control the spread. If this means wearing masks through 2022, then perhaps we should comply.
