Will Humble Batteries Help Save Our Planet?

We first encountered Moshiel Biton when writing about his company Addionics transforming battery architecture. Since then, we discovered the surprisingly young man is a materials scientist with a PhD from Imperial College London. He posted a thought piece on Israel21C on April 27, 2022, where he posed the question will humble batteries help save our planet?

How Humble Batteries Could Help Save Our Planet

In Biton’s world we are in one of the biggest transitions of our time, saving the planet and being more eco-conscious. However, we incline to add the word ‘entering’ because we don’t believe vast swathes of the world are fully onside. But we do agree batteries are in the forefront of the drive to switch to renewable energy.

Electric vehicle demand alone jumped 40% from 2019 to 2020, and the trend is continuing. A comforting 16% contraction of the general car market during the COVID-19 crisis at least partly confirms this. This could not have happened without storage batteries, but that is not their only essential role.

Electricity Generation Increasingly Depends on Batteries

Humble batteries help save our planet from global warming, by enabling green electricity from wind, sun, and tide. Battery storage is already replacing gas peaking stations, although Germany plans 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2035. The move to greater energy self-sufficiency is accelerating the process.

The battery, as Biton sees it is a “a small and commonly unappreciated component,” However, it now has “a heavy weight resting on its shoulders”. That’s because it will empower many industries to move to clean energy and thereby reduce demand for oil, coal and gas.

We stand at a crossroads where the future of our planet, as we know it, is increasingly at risk. And with that the future of our species too. Next time you hold a battery in your hands,  do wonder “will we allow you to preserve our planet for future generations?”

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
