Popular opinion seems to hold that only older people can have a bad spell of COVID. However, that’s not the whole truth according to CNN health writing on June 25, 2021. They cite a new, authoritative study that confirms young teens can take COVID-19 badly too. Their overall message is, don’t play russian roulette with their future. Get them vaccinated.
Young Teens Can Take COVID-19 Badly Despite What They Say
A visit to any public park shows young American teens have a ‘school’s out, lessons over’ approach to the pandemic. Their future is ahead of them and they are starting now. It would be a shame if the coronavirus set them back at this critical time. But, where’s the evidence?
The evidence is in US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC’s) latest Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of June 5, 2021. According to this (see link below) the CDC took a grab sample of 204 adolescents likely to be hospitalized primarily for COVID-19 during January 1 to March 31, 2021. Then they traced their progress.
What Happened to the Sample of 204 Adolescents Next?
Nearly a third of the teens judged likely to be hospitalized primarily for COVID-19 required intensive care treatment. Of these, one in twenty required mechanical ventilation, although we are relieved to say none died.
An expert from Yale Medicine explains mechanical ventilation involves inserting a tube down into a patient’s windpipe while they are anesthetized. And then monitoring them after they come round, to make sure their air sacs do not collapse, potentially causing them to suffocate.
This is not a good space for young teens who take COVID-19 badly. Bad COVID could set them back years, and the shadow may never go away. We agree the CNN used a very small sample. But there’s no denying your kid has a small chance of being next. This should be even lower, if they have the vaccine.
