90-Minute Tests Distinguish Flu from COVID

Two different coronavirus strains cause Influenza and COVID-19 respectively. Both infect the upper respiratory tract, and are more likely in winter because viruses survive longer in colder temperatures. However, similar early symptoms may cause confusion among health providers and affected people. Therefore, two new 90-minute tests that distinguish Flu from COVID may provide the answer.

Two Different 90-Minute Tests Distinguish Flu from COVID-19

The UK Department of Health and Social Care made the announcement on the national website on August 3, 2020. The first of the two 90-minute tests that distinguish Flu from COVID uses sequencing by Oxford Nanopore Technologies Limited.

Nanopore-sequencing analyzes a sample in terms of its dimensions, and the composition of its RNA, alternatively DNA.  The company claims the method provides precise detection of the SARS-Cov-2 virus causing COVID-19. Moreover, processing of samples occurs in portable devices not requiring laboratory support. This will help the UK’s response as it moves from summer to winter.

The Alternative LamPORE Test for Greater, Mass Testing Volumes

The Oxford Nanopore Technologies test uses a simple device able to process 15 tests a day. Therefore, the UK National Health is deploying these to cancer, maternity, and emergency wards in hospitals for on the spot results.

However, a second supplier, LamPORE Assay is supplying larger-capacity machines able to process up to 15,000 swab and saliva samples a day. UK COVID-19 tests traditionally turn over within 24 hours, although some may take days. Therefore, this is not a practical solution for high-density sites like care homes where outbreaks rapidly become spikes.

The two new desktop tests distinguishing FLU from COVID in 90 minutes will help close this vulnerable gap. Because being able to detect Influenza as well, will help carers provide the right advice to a vulnerable elderly population.

About Author

Electricity has always intrigued me. I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
