The European Union has a project in hand to catch up with strategic battery production. Deutsche Welle announced massive subsidies throughout the local industry to encourage open competition. Member states Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden will all contribute to the total $3.6 billion European batteries receive for specified research. That’s because they want to put their technology on par with Asia.
Seventeen Companies Share What European Batteries Receive
Germany and France have been spearheading a drive to ensure Europe remains abreast of the transition to electric vehicles. The EU has concerns about Asia producing 80% of electric car batteries according to Deutsche Welle. Whereas the European Union only manages a paltry 3%.
Margrethe Vestager, the EU commissioner in charge of competition policy approved the subsidies European batteries receive over time. Because stimulating production is strategically important for our economy and society she explains. Moreover, it has great potential to grow green energy and transport, create more jobs, and encourage sustainability and competitiveness.
A Future ‘Airbus Industry’ for The Union’s Batteries
The union’s Airbus multinational stands as a symbol of what small countries can achieve when they work together. The EU intends to replicate this model by dividing research responsibilities fairly between participating member states.
The main battery development categories are raw and advanced materials, cells and modules, battery systems and re-purposing, and recycling and refining. Proven companies in participating member states will help ensure industrial scale production by 2025. For example, Germany’s beneficiaries include household names BMW and Opel. German battery manufacturer Varta, the Umicore recycling division, and BASF will also participate.
Good results should accrue when European batteries receive focused attention at top government level this way. Further diversifying manufacturing will be good for our consumers and industry.
