Switching Tracks – Caring for Family at Home with Covid-19
You may be a teenage daughter, or a son pressed into the role of nursing a parent. The following principles apply when caring for family at home with Covid-19 regardless who you are. Centers for Disease Control say these are the most important:
1… Help the patient take their prescribed medication and follow doctor’s advice
2… Administer over-counter medicines for fever, but only if the doctor agrees
3… Make sure the patient drinks lots of fluids and persuade them to take it easy
4… Oversee grocery shopping and medication. Have this delivered if you can
5… Don’t forget to feed the pets but don’t allow them to disturb the patient’s rest
The Warning Signs and What to Do About Them
Four out of every five times, the above measures may be sufficient. However, do remain alert for breathing problems, chills, coughs, fever, muscle pain, sore throat, and / or loss of taste or smell. Call the doctor if you sense the patient is getting sicker. They will understand you are caring for family at home with Covid-19 and know what to do.
However, you may need to go into hyper drive and seek emergency care if you notice any of the following:
1… Difficulty breathing
2… Chest pain or pressure
3… Bouts of confusion
4… Difficulty waking up
5… Difficulty staying awake
6… Bluish tint on face or lips
Please do not delay if you notice any of these symptoms. Call your local emergency facility, or 911 right away. Explain you are caring for family at home with Covid-19 and you should receive the priority assistance you need.
