Journal Nature wrote this topic up on August 9, 2022. They say researchers are only now beginning to test treatments for this troublesome medical condition. There are several reasons why we still wait for a Long COVID treatment after quite some time. We investigate, and report back on stumble stones.
The Key Barrier Delaying Progress at the Present Moment
Heidi Ledford writing for Journal Nature explains Long COVID is a complex illness. That’s because our medical scientists are still unsure about the condition’s root cause. However, there are several possible explanations for this.
One possibility is lingering COVID continues stimulating our immune system. Another contender is the theory the infection generates antibodies that mistakenly attack the body’s own proteins. This would cause damage long after the initial illness.
Researchers have also established the illness could be causing microscopic blood clots. Yet another theory proposes it causes havoc among our gut micro-organisms. There is some evidence supporting each of these. However this is still insufficient.
Why We Still Wait for a Long-COVID Treatment
This prevailing uncertainty could dissuade researchers from launching trials, which is the first step along on the road to a solution. One major problem is the condition associates with over 200 symptoms. Moreover, brain and fatigue, for example wax and wane over time,
Martin Landray is an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford in England. He says “All of this complicates clinical-trial design. I haven’t gotten involved in this space. The science hasn’t seemed sufficiently mature.”
None the less, a few small trials have begun. “I’m still optimistic,” Imperial College London immunologist Danny Altman admits. “Because the right stuff is going on, and there’s a fair amount of funding out there. Something is going to give.”
