Four COVID Hotspots to Stay Away From

Dr. J. Wes Ulm is a Harvard and MIT-trained MD, PhD. He also has a background in bioinformatics, gene therapy, genetics, drug discovery, consulting and education. When Heather Newgen interviewed him for the Eat This, Not That platform, she found he had more than healthy eating on his mind. And so they got around to discussing four COVID hotspots to try to steer clear of instead.

Dr. Ulm’s Four COVID Hotspots to Avoid

Dr. Ulm does not believe the pandemic is over. Because “The omicron BA.5 sub variant is the most contagious infectious agent ever encountered by human society,” he says. There are four places we should strictly-speaking avoid.

AVOID BADLY-MANAGED LARGE INDOOR GATHERINGS

We therefore need to take extra precaution in large indoor areas. And especially so if there is no air filtering, ventilation, and UV disinfection. Better still, we should stay away.

AVOID CLOSE CONTACT AT SMALLER INDOOR GATHERINGS

Smaller indoor gatherings are great places to pick up respiratory infections, unless we keep our distance and wear proper face masks. The BA.5 Omicron sub variant is remarkably smart at getting past our defenses.

AVOID UNMASKED GROUPS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

We are likely to encounter large groups of unmasked individuals on public transport. And they will breathing out and talking loudly to be heard. We should find a quiet corner and wear a decent face mask. Dr. Ulm says it’s a good idea to have a respirator handy.

AVOID INDOOR GYMS WITH POOR VENTILATION

Health clubs and indoor gyms with poor ventilation are near-perfect breeding grounds for the Omicron BA.5 sub variant. “The heavy breathing and heavy exertion can amount to an inauspicious combination to put it charitably,” Dr. Ulm said.

We may not be able to avoid those places because of our chosen or involuntary lifestyle. However, at the very least his advice is a timely reminder to take extra care during the ongoing pandemic.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
