To Mars, and Perhaps with Lithium Too

Scientists have been exploring the potential of intriguing research we reported earlier, concerning batteries with organic polymer electrodes. These can still function normally at temperatures as cold as -70 celsius. Because their ions don’t have to squeeze between electrode molecules in a process we call intercalation. Scientists believe these batteries could help us settle on Mars, and perhaps even deeper in space.

There’s a good chance these new batteries will function well on Mars, although only in warmer regions away from the poles. Having ions accumulate on the surface of the polymer will allow critical batteries to last longer, perhaps forever someday unlike Opportunity Rover.

We are immensely proud to play our small part in the battery industry. Our deep cycle 6V and 12V lead-acid batteries provide valued service in uninterruptable power supply, alarm, home, garden, and sport applications. However, settlers relocating to Mars will prefer lighter, polymer batteries.

We Often Wonder About Life on Mars

We often wonder what life will really be like for the first colonizers on Mars. The lucky few, if that is the right term may never return, or see their loved ones again. That said, we guess this is equally true of our ancestors. who arrived in America with just their clothes on their backs.

Many arrived on rickety sailing ships without lifeboats, or even life preservers. We are pleased NASA can now send batteries to Mars able to withstand extreme subzero temperatures. We hope their motive is more than just survival.

It would be a sad day indeed if climate change rendered them the only gene pool surviving earth warming. That would be a tragedy, after all the effort and all our achievements on a planet that has been our refuge for so long.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
