There are thousands of confirmed corona virus cases in China as we write. We only know of four in Canada, namely three in Ontario and one in British Columbia. Twenty-four other countries have also had minor outbreaks. Most are prosperous with busy airports. We outline the Canadian corona virus policy in this post.
Will the Canadian Corona Virus Policy Be Better Than SARS?
Canadian health authorities battled to contain the 2003 SARS outbreak which killed 44 people in Toronto, according to New York Times. However, the country will be better-prepared this time after first-hand experience of how rampantly viruses travel.
The Canadian Public Health Agency is monitoring all provinces and territories, to ensure a coordinated response to any new 2019-nCoV cases. The official Canadian corona virus policy also includes watching across the border through liaison with World Health Organization. The Public Health Agency of Canada says the risk to Canadian travelers is low. However, if they travel to China they may put their lives in peril.
Canadian Government Moves to Tighten Noose on Virus
The Government of Canada has asked its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to China. Moreover, it would prefer they do not visit Hubei Province at all. There’s a fine dividing line between democratic rights and responsible health control. We therefore hope all Canadian’s take their government’s travel advice to heart.
On February 2, 2020 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened the Incident Response Group for an update on the 2019-nCoV virus. That same day the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Health, and Defense put a plan in place to help Canadian citizens leave Huhan.
The Canadian corona virus policy says evacuees, including staff and flight crews will remain at Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Ontario for fourteen days medical observation. It would be foolhardy to allow any exceptions to this precaution.
