The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 mutated repeatedly since late 2019, when doctors noticed it in China for the first time. All viruses do this as they replicate themselves, in a process called ‘antigenic shift’ according to CDC. But most of those evolutions are insignificant to humans. However, a handful of them have been significant, as the new Delta Plus variant with noteworthy differences may be.

The Time Lag Before We Understand Delta Plus Fully

New COVID variants take time to spread to the extent they qualify to be on the watch list. That’s because scientists need a depth of data before they can apply to the general population. The Delta Plus is at that point in the evolution of knowledge.

However, we decided to share the noteworthy differences with the Delta Plus variant now. That’s because there are early signs it could affect the course of the pandemic. But we hasten to mention we should be able to protect ourselves, by taking sensible precautions.

Noteworthy Differences Concerning the Delta Plus Variant

The first signs of Delta Plus were detected by Public Health England, during routine scanning. The original Delta is now endemic there and elsewhere. Sheer numbers increase the random possibility of it spawning a concerning new variant.

Delta Plus features a new mutation of its spike protein that transfers the infection into human cells. Scientists are calling this mutation K417N, or Delta Plus.

There are some 200 known cases globally, including Canada, India, Japan, Nepal, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and United States, according to CNBC.

India’s Health Ministry issued an advisory on June 22, 2021. It reported Delta Plus K417N shows early signs of greater infectiousness. And it may also bind more effectively to lung cells, and reduce efficacy of some monoclonal antibody therapies.

This calls for maintaining a safe distance, and covering our mouths and noses when we are nearby other people. And frequently sanitizing our hands and forearms, so we can’t transfer the virus from surfaces to our faces.
