Origin of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus Unraveling

Little new information unfolded during the World Health Organization (WHO) visit to China. It was more a matter of the laboratory theory regarding the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus unraveling.  But this was because of a lack of evidence, as opposed to a solid alternative. The WHO believes it is time to move on. So what else did they discover in the course of their ‘serious discussion and very diligent research’?

The Coronavirus ‘Most Likely’ Originated in Animals.

First, the WHO team dismissed the theory the COVID virus leaked from a Wuhan laboratory. In fact, CNBC News relays it was ‘most likely’ circulated among animals before it crossed over to human beings. This aligns with Republic of China’s claims. It could therefore be a good idea to shelve the laboratory theory, and collaborate on shutting down the pandemic.

The WHO investigators visited markets, laboratories and hospitals. These included potential hot spots Huanan Seafood Market, Wuhan Institute of Virology, and Wuhan Center for Disease Control laboratory. Investigation chair Dr. Peter Ben Embarek considers ‘the most likely pathway was a crossover into humans from an intermediary species’.

What’s Next With the Origin of SARS-CoV-2 Virus Unraveled?

Dr. Embarek believes the animal theory requires more research aimed in that direction. Moreover, original reports of what happened in the early days of December 2019 held true, arguably adding more confidence to China’s version.

There is much work to do still, given it took a decade to discover the SARS virus crossed from bats. Liang Wannian, head of the Expert Covid panel at China’s National Health Commission suggested possible sources.

While bats and pangolins are potential candidates, he agrees, their samples did not appear to be ‘sufficiently similar’. Minks and cats were highly susceptible creatures, and could act as reservoirs. Unraveling one theory of the laboratory origin of SARS-CoV-2 virus must become the first step towards unfolding the real one.

I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
