Chinese manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) already commands 33% of the global lithium-ion battery market, and aspires to more. It made a dramatic announcement during its product launch on August 16, 2023, which could fast-track viable electric transport. The company claims its new super-fast-charging CATL battery delivers close to 450 miles on a single ten-minute charge. And it promises to start mass-producing the improved battery this year.
Will the Super-Fast-Charging CATL Battery End Range Anxiety?
CATL believes range anxiety is the number-one factor holding electric vehicle sales back. It has been tackling this problem on a number of levels, including:
- Fully crystalizing the lithium-ion-phosphate electrode to facilitate ion extraction, and rapid response to charging signals.
- Modifying the properties of the graphite surface to increase intercalation channels, and shorten the ion journey.
- Delivering a multi-gradient-layered electrode design, striking a balance between fast charging and long range.
- Deploying a novel superconducting electrolyte that decreases resistance to lithium-ion movement.
- Adapting the separator, to reduce resistance to ion transmission through greater porosity and shorter distance.
CATL claims the following user benefits will flow from this combination of innovations:
- Close to 450 mile driving range between recharges, thanks to a ‘trailblazing all-in-one grouping technology’.
- Recharging to 80% capacity in ten minutes at normal temperatures, and thirty minutes at -10°C / 14°F.
- ‘Uncompromised acceleration performance’ at low temperatures attracting greater interest in colder climates.
Safety First for Advanced Lithium-Ion-Phosphate Battery
CATL applies a ‘highly safe coating to provide dual protection’ to its upgraded electrolyte and separator. And then it ‘regulates the global temperature field inside the cells using intelligent algorithms’. The company believes it has solved the problems associated with fast refueling, enabling a ‘high level of safety’ for its innovative new product.
