Vaccinations Reduce Likelihood of Long COVID

A research report awaiting peer review in the journal medRxiv, makes the interesting claim vaccinations reduce likelihood of Long COVID. Because this intrigued us, we immediately wanted to know the basis for the Swiss researchers’ observation. We learned they reached their conclusion after comparing patients with, and without vaccinations six months after their primary COVID-19 infection.

Long COVID is the popular name for Post COVID Condition, with acronym PCC. This is a lingering condition that surfaces after the main infection, and debilitates the patient. The researchers hoped to gain better understanding of the condition, since this has significantly impacted human lives globally.

Vaccinations Reduce Likelihood of Long COVID Follow Through

The study examined COVID-19 patient experiences among individuals with and without vaccinations. However, in this instance they did not access patient records. Instead (see link below for details) they interrogated them directly using questionnaires.

They sourced their subjects from two groups with COVID between August 5, 2020, and February 25, 2022. But they also sourced data from the fifth phase of the Corona Immunitas seroprevalence study. In this way, they ensured Wild Type, Delta, and Omicron variants featured in their study.

The Raw Data That Their Study Uncovered

  1. Some 25%, 17%, and 13% of Wild Type, Delta, and Omicron patients respectively had Long COVID six months after their most recent infection.
  2. But individuals WITH vaccinations BEFORE those infections, fared better with 15% and 11% Long COVID for Delta and Omicron respectively.
  3. Omicron-infected patients who HAD their vaccinations had lower Long COVID risk than Wild Type patients WITHOUT vaccinations.
  4. However, the researchers did NOT note any significant differences in terms of symptoms, or severity between those groups.

The Swiss team concluded having Omicron AND vaccination ‘reduced the risk of PCC symptoms six months following infection’, when they compared this to Wild Type infection WITHOUT prior vaccination according to Medical News and Life Sciences. Wild Type COVID is the un-mutated version in humans with the original spike protein.
