COVID-19 vaccines are not 100% effective, although there are measures we can take to increase our cover. Raw vaccine protection rates vary between different products too, but what does this mean for us? It means if a vaccine is 90% effective, we still have a 10% chance of catching the disease. However, if we do fall ill, the chances are excellent we will live to tell the tale.
Comparing Vaccine Efficacy and Effectiveness
Vaccine efficacy is the rate at which people, given the vaccine in a controlled clinical trial, became infected later. Statisticians use this information to calculate the relative risk of developing the disease, with or without the vaccine.
However, this does not mean people with the disease inevitably become ill. Nor does it mean they face a significant risk of dying either. If they have strong immune systems they could shake the infection off. This largely narrows the impact to people with weaker immune systems.
Immune systems may be weak for several reasons. For example (a) there may be a genetic factor, or (b) people may be immuno-compromised for a medical cause. Alternatively, they may simply be getting older, meaning their immunity is naturally reducing.
Vaccine effectiveness, on the other hand is the measure of how the vaccine works in the real world. World Health Organization explains vaccine protection rates can vary between communities, as they have their own unique demographic blends.
How to Naturally Boost Vaccine Protection Rates
COVID-19 vaccines do not provide 100% protection from falling ill from the virus. However, they can throttle the infection rate back, as more of us become vaccinated. And moreover, if we do develop the condition we are far less likely to go to hospital.
But vaccinated people will still be at some risk, for as long as others refuse the treatment. This means we should continue masking, distancing, and sanitizing. But in return we will have the comfort of being as safe as we can. And making our personal contribution towards controlling the pandemic.
