Consistent, correct use of face masks is a proven way to prevent catching, and spreading COVID-19 infection. It seems likely we may need to continue wearing them after vaccination for a while longer. However, they can slip out of position and become leaky if we are not careful. Therefore, we should consider wearing face mask braces in riskier places as added precaution.
Where Are These Riskier Places Likely to Be?
We are more likely to be exposed to the coronavirus in crowded places. That’s because this increases the statistical likelihood of an infection entering our personal space. This simple fact is behind the logic of limiting the number or people in shops, religious gatherings, sports events, and so on.
However, we may be unable to avoid these crowded situations, or even consciously take a chance at an important gathering. Wearing face mask braces in riskier places like these – and there are many more – may make good sense. However, there are other alternatives, including double masking according to NPR National Public Radio.
Alternatives to Wearing Face Mask Braces in Riskier Places
The goal is to get a better mask fit in potentially riskier venues, like crowded stores, subways, and sidewalks for example. Face mask braces may improve a single layer of protection. But Dr. Anthony Fauci says two masks are better than one in the face of unpredictable variants.
Anything that improves the seal, especially around nose-creases is helpful according to Richard Corsi at Portland State University. But there’s no one-size-fits-all answer adds Sonali Advani, assistant professor of medicine at Duke University.
NPR National Public Radio suggests several alternatives. These include using medical adhesive tape to seal edges, wearing face mask braces, and adopting double masking. Or we could stay away from crowded places as often as possible, and generally be safer without needing those additional measures.
