We have always known vaccines do not provide absolute cover, although we should be okay if we take sensible care. That’s because their main purpose is to prevent serious disease, and in that regard they are highly successful. What we did not realize at first was more virulent variants would increase the likelihood of breakthrough cases. With the wisdom of hindsight we review what we now know.
Vaccine Breakthrough Cases and Delta Variant
Reports from CDC – including the one below – confirm FDA-approved vaccines provide good protection in the United States. Infections, diseases, hospitalizations and deaths are all exponentially lower among people with complete vaccination.
The response to the Delta variant confirms this trend. However, it’s a fact there are more breakthrough infections than previously. The reasons behind this are twofold. In the first instance, there’s a statistical ratio between unvaccinated infections, and breakthroughs among people with full vaccinations.
In the second instance, both infection rates are rising in the face of the highly contagious Delta variant. Most of these cases are at least in theory avoidable with proper use of face masks, social distancing, and sanitation.
A Case in Point in Dane County, Wisconsin
Dane County has seen a significant drop in cases since vaccination began – see link below. Although breakthrough cases have occurred, as we might expect. It’s worth mentioning the county has over 70% vaccine coverage, with a high percentage having both doses.
The low number of partly and fully vaccinated cases is even more remarkable when viewed against overall statistics for the county. There can no longer be any doubt mRNA COVID vaccines are working. To argue otherwise would surely fly in the face of logic, and science.
